In Pele's Presence - Kīlauea, Hawaii
The red glow was visible well before we reached the flowing lava. I was excited and anxious and this feeling intensified as we got closer to the lava field. Cresting the last high point and seeing the lava field for the first time is a moment I will never forget. As I looked out I could see multiple points where there were fissures emanating a bright orange/red glow from the lava that was flowing beneath our feet. I had butterflies and, at that point, I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue across this forbidding environment to the cliff vantage point where you could see the lava fingers entering the ocean.
